Three guidelines for safe babywearing

Three guidelines for safe babywearing

Carrying your little one is a wonderful way for bonding and closeness while you keep moving freely. Follow these three guidelines to ensure safe and comfortable babywearing.

Pick the right carrier for you

First, select a carrier that is suitable for your baby’s age, size, and developmental stage. Most importantly, newborns need a carrier that provides additional support for their head and neck, while older babies can already maintain healthy posture on their own.

The MONKOSE Heiwa carrier is suitable for newborns and toddlers. (From 3,5 kg to 15 kg, or from baby size 50 to 86).

Healthy posture for babies ('TICKS')

Second, to make sure your baby is perfectly positioned in the carrier, follow the 'TICKS' guidelines.

TIGHT

The carrier should be snug against your body, providing enough support for your baby without being too tight. A secure fit helps prevent your baby from slumping down in the carrier.

IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES

Your baby’s face should always be visible and remain uncovered by fabric or your body to ensure proper airflow.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS

Your baby should be positioned close enough to your face so that you can easily kiss the top of their head without straining your neck. This ensures that baby is at the optimal height.

KEEP CHIN OFF CHEST

Ensure that your baby’s chin is not resting on their chest, so they can breathe freely. There should be enough space for two fingers to fit between baby' chin and chest.

SUPPORTED SPINE

For newborns and younger babies, make sure their head and neck are fully supported by the carrier. Also, baby’s back and hips should be well supported in a natural squatting position, or in the so-called "M-position." Ensure that baby’s knees are higher than their hips and that their legs are nicely spread.

Stay alert

Third, regularly check on your baby to ensure they are comfortable, breathing easily, and safely positioned. Pay attention to their cues to keep them happy and content. Dress your baby in light layers appropriate for the weather, and check that they are at a comfortable temperature, as babywearing adds some extra warmth.

Some extra recommendations

Always follow the MONKOSE guidelines for putting on, adjusting, and removing the carrier. Regularly check that all buckles, ties, and straps are in good condition and fastened correctly.

While wearing your baby, avoid activities that could lead to falls or sudden movements, such as running, biking, or cooking near hot surfaces. For low-birthweight babies and children with medical conditions, seek advice from a health professional first.

By following these basic safety guidelines, you can relax and enjoy the benefits of babywearing while ensuring the safety and comfort of your little one.
