BABYWEARING SAFETY

Carrying your little one is a wonderful way for bonding and keeping them close while allowing you to move freely. To ensure your baby’s safety, we recommend following key guidelines for safe and comfortable babywearing.

Pick the right carrier for you

Select a carrier that is suitable for your baby’s age, size, and developmental stage. Newborns need a carrier that supports their head and neck, while older babies may need a different type of support.

Our MONKOSE Heiwa baby carrier is suitable for newborns (from 3,5 kg and size 50) to toddlers (15 kg and size 86).

Position your baby correctly

To make sure your baby is perfectly positioned in the carrier, follow the 'TICKS' guidelines.

TIGHT

The carrier should be snug against your body, providing enough support for your baby without being too tight. A secure fit helps prevent your baby from slipping or slumping down in the carrier.

IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES

Your baby’s face should always be visible and not covered by fabric or your body to optimize airflow.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS

Your baby should be positioned close enough to your face so that you can easily kiss the top of their head without straining your neck. This ensures they are not too low or too far away from your body.

KEEP CHIN OFF CHEST

Ensure your baby’s chin is not resting on their chest, as this can restrict their airway. There should be enough space for two fingers to fit between their chin and chest.

SUPPORTED SPINE

For newborns and younger babies, make sure their head and neck are fully supported, especially if they lack muscle control. Your baby’s back and hips should be well supported in the so-called "M-position." Always ensure your baby’s knees are higher than their hips and that their legs are spread.

Stay alert

Regularly check on your baby to ensure they are comfortable, breathing easily, and safely positioned. Pay attention to their cues to keep them happy and content. Dress your baby in light layers appropriate for the weather, and check that they are at a comfortable temperature, as babywearing can add extra warmth.

Some extra recommendations:

  • Always follow the MONKOSE guidelines for putting on, adjusting, and removing the carrier. Regularly check that all buckles, ties, and straps are in good condition and fastened correctly.
  • While wearing your baby, avoid activities that could lead to falls or sudden movements, such as running, biking, or cooking with hot surfaces.
  • For low birthweight babies and children with medical conditions, seek advice from a health professional.

By following these safety guidelines, you can enjoy the benefits of babywearing while ensuring your little one remains safe and comfortable.
